Wayne Fertich, Regional Councillor, Grimsby 2022

My journey begins many years ago when Walter Muise, who was an Alderman at the time, suggested that I enter into local politics. He felt my dedication to the Royal Canadian Legion (Because I am a Veteran) and my years as a Lion showed my dedication to “Giving Back to the Community” were valuable assets.  Unfortunately I lost, which was a good thing because my present employer was extremely demanding as I was on a job for 24/7. For the next 12 years
I was concerned about my job while still providing a service to the Legion and Lions Club of Grimsby.
In 1997 I won in a bi-election in Ward 3 because Debbie Zimmerman went to the Chair for the Region and Bob Bentley went to fill her spot at Regional Councillor.  During my time as Alderman for Grimsby (1997-2010) I was Deputy Mayor for 3 terms, Chair of Rec Services (2000-2003), Finance from (2003-2010).  I also represented council on the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Board, Chair of Building Committee twinning of the PKing Arena and building Committee for the Library/Art Gallery and Niagara Gateway, a member of the Transportation Strategy steering Committee for Grimsby.
During this time my wife and I owned the Gables Restaurant until 2010 because it was time to smell the roses and enjoy our retirement.
In 2018  I was successful to win the seat for Regional Council (2018 to Present).  The past four years have been very challenging and also rewarding for me.  I believe that the present positions I hold are extremely important for the small communities.  I have attained the positions, which my peers have voted me into the following, 1. Chairman for the “Transportation Strategy Steering Committee”, 2. Vice Chairman for the “Public Works Committee” and Vice Chairman for the “Niagara Region transit Commission” which is the newly formed committee to amalgamate transit in the entire Region.
My community involvement has also been very rewarding.
I have obtained the 75 year Commemorative Medal from the Royal Canadian Legion, the Paul Harris Award from Rotary International fro Service above Self and the Special Services Medal from the Canadian Armed Forces.
I am very passionate to continue the good work for Grimsby in the next four years.  There are projects under my wing that I would like to see complete, like the GO, Amalgamation of the Transit ,  and particularly the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
