The Niagara GO working group is thrilled with the 2016 provincial budget commitment this afternoon to expand daily GO Train service to Niagara.

This is clear commitment from the Province as Niagara was one of only two communities named for GO rail extension, say regional officials.

“Great news for Niagara and we’ll be getting more details in the coming months about possible construction timing costs,” said Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley.

Reg. Chair Alan Caslin said months of effort by Niagara’s GO team paid off.

“Niagara’s united call for the expansion of GO Rail service to Niagara Region has been answered. We thank the Ontario government and Minister Del Duca for recognizing the merits of our strong business case. This important transit project will bring new jobs and investment to our region and foster an environment for economic prosperity in Niagara and across the GTHA,” said Caslin.

For Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, this is just a first step.

“I am excited that for the first time ever, an Ontario budget has highlighted the extension of the GO rail year-round network to Niagara. This is a positive first step, and we eagerly anticipate the details regarding the timing of announcing this extension all the way to Niagara Falls very soon,” said Jim Diodati.
