Two Hamilton residents were arrested in the early morning hours of Aug. 29 following a report of a theft-in-progress and a brief suspect apprehension pursuit.
Members of the Niagara Regional Police Service, 8-District uniform branch were alerted to a theft-in-progress call at approximately 3 a.m.
A homeowner observed an individual breaking into a vehicle on Quarry Road in Grimsby.
Officers responded and located two suspects in a vehicle on Elm Tree Road.
When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled along an unassumed portion of the roadway where it became stuck. The two occupants, a man and a woman were arrested without incident.
A search of the vehicle revealed a significant amount of property that is believed to have been stolen from vehicles in Hamilton and Grimsby. Additionally, a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine was found as well as other drug paraphernalia.
A 27-year-old man and is charged with:
– Flight from police
– Theft under $5000
– Mischief under $5000
– Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
– Driving while under suspension
– Possession of a schedule 1 substance (Crystal Meth)
A 22-year-old Hamilton woman is charged with:
– Theft under $5000
– Mischief under $5000
– Possession of a schedule 1 substance (Crystal Meth)
Both were held in custody pending a bail hearing. The investigation is ongoing in cooperation with members of the Hamilton Police Service in an attempt to identify the rightful owners of the property. Additional charges may be laid.
Police are reminding the public to remove keys, laptops, gps units and other items of value from their vehicle when it is left unattended, and to always lock your car doors.
