History comes alive along The Forty

Downtown Grimsby will be transformed this Saturday into a relic from the 1800s, complete with re-enactments of soldiers, villagers, a sentry on guard, and a surgeon you definitely wouldn’t want to run into.

The Heritage Village will be centred around the south end of Coronation Park, by the pool, and run from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

All re-enactors will be fully available for questions from the public about the time period and their roles, explains Phil Conklin, who is organizing the Heritage Village.

Some of these characters might be baffling to look at 200 into the future, such as the surgeon.

“He will explain the various medical equipment,” said Conklin, as well as the procedures Conklin describes as “tortures” and the reason why the doctor got his name, Dr. Dunnfore.

“If one survives, it’s something of a miracle,” he said.

There will be less torturous re-enactments running for the entirety of the day as well.

They include a bread maker with an open fire pit, a blacksmithing couple bringing their forge, and a spinner, spinning wheel included.

“Part of the village will be set up as a soldiers’ camp,” Conklin said. “You will see open canopies, soldiers cleaning their muskets, in their uniforms.”

The big show for the day is a 2 p.m. parade from the post office to Coronation Park.
