Community care hosting Coldest Walk of the Year

Get a small glimpse of what it’s like to be homeless during The Coldest Night of the Year event.

Community Care of West Niagara (CCWN) is encouraging residents to bundle up and raise some cold, hard cash to help the homeless and those at risk for homelessness in our community. The walk is set to take place on Feb. 22.

Back (L to R) Bev Reimer, CCWN client services coordinator; Brian Carney, event director; Kim Fretz, CCWN admin assistant. Front (L to R) Ken Gebhardt, CCWN facilities and operations manager, and; Carole Fuhrer, CCWN executive director are ready for the walk.

Taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year will help participants understand the experience of surviving on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to aid the work of CCWN in providing much-needed support to members of our community.

“Although Feb. 22 isn’t generally the coldest night of the year, we do hope that for those couple of hours participants experience even a small little tease of what it’s like for the homeless on a dark, cold night,” said Brian Carney, Executive Director of Bluesea Philanthropy, which is the organization that oversees the walk. “I hope that some of the walkers are miserable and whiney and then go home with a better sense of gratitude because they do have a home… That’s not an option for some.”

Lincoln’s walk begins and ends at the Lincoln Community Centre located at 4361 Central Avenue in Beamsville. Walkers can take part in a 2km, 5km or 10km route..

This is CCWN’s first year taking part in the event, with a fundraising goal of $25,000.00.
